These results are late, I'll admit, but frankly, with the weather as nice as it's been, I took the time to get outside and enjoy it. In fact, its 72 degrees and I'm typing this from my deck all the while sipping down an iced tea and keeping my dog Splash running up and down the hill after a tennis ball. Just your typical November weather here at Carthage College.
This weekend was a new meet for our schedule - the Kiefer Fall Classic. While I really like competitive dual meets because they bring competition and racing into clear focus, we were finding that double-duals weren't allowing all of our guys to get many swims in. At the same time, I really dislike long drawn-out invitationals. They're fatiguing and tiring and really, at the end of the day who remembers whether you finished 1st or 8th at some unrested invitational in
November? Hence, the Fall Classic. We brought in a few teams (three women's, two men's) for two quick sessions with lunch thrown in between. It was a perfect way to get a lot of guys involved in the meet, had good competition and got some good training/racing in.
On the whole, the results were mixed. We didn't have any poor swims. We had a few exceptional swims, some solid ones and a lot of tired swims. As any psychologist will tell you, our best strengths, when pushed to their extremes, can become weaknesses. That was the case today. This year's team is exceptionally coachable - they're very receptive to new ideas and change. Don't get me wrong, its a great trait and we're already seeing guys take huge steps. In quite a few cases though, we had guys coming out saying things like, "I was really trying to..." set their hands deeper, get tuck tighter on turns or do something technique wise. That was all and great, but lost a little was the RACING! The getting up and challenging (and beating) the guy next to you.
We spoke about that between the sessions, and whaddya know, this coachable group managed to make some changes and swim much better in the second half.
This Friday we host Lake Forest before hitting the road to challenge Kalamazoo and Hope Colleges. Both are consistent top-ten or top-fifteen teams so we need to be racing from the first event. But enough here's the play-by-play:

Licensed to Carthage College HY-TEK's Meet Manager 11/3/2008 12:52 PM 2008 Kiefer Fall Classic - 11/1/2008 Results Event 2 Men 200 Yard Medley Relay =============================================================================== We treated the 200 Medley as an opportynity to get several swims in, especially since I expect we'll have plenty of competition for the different spots come February and March. At the same time, it showed one of our weaknesses. We held Stephen out and doing so really exposed our lack of depth in the breaststroke. While Mike, Adam, Chris and Ben all and very solid swims, they're ready to replace an All-American just yet. the other thing that stood out was how safe our relay starts were. They were VERY VERY conservative, and cartainly something, with the aid of take-off pads, will get better over the course of the season. With the exception of Chris, all our backstrokers lacked early speed, but managed to pick up the pace on the second half, particularly Pat and Bob. The breaststrokers I already mentioned. On fly, we had quality swims across the board - Doug in a quick 24.27 and Andy in 24.88 led the way. Mitchell looked very good with his 25.31 while Clinton and Alex both seemed to run out of gas towrads the end. Rip tried as best he could to get us back in the race. His 21.50 was very good, especially considering the wake he was working to over- come. Issac and Blake both looked sharp, but likewise struggled to generate the early speed. Buck and Dan were likewise impressive, though you can see that with 0.38 and 0.52 relay exchanges, they have plenty of room to improve. =============================================================================== 1 Lewis University-IL 'A' 1:40.64 1) Harrison, Ryan R 2) r:0.16 Pavlakovich, Luke 3) r:0.31 Sommer, John 4) r:0.07 Ament, Jason 67 25.99 27.97 24.58 22.10 2 Illinois Tech 'A' 1:40.84 1) Taylor, Joe 2) r:0.08 Pinsonneault, Kyle 3) r:0.06 Cuffe, Dale 4) r:-0.01 Mehr, Andrew 73 26.16 29.22 24.31 21.15 3 Carthage College 'A' 1:42.22 1) Winiecki, Kyle 2) r:0.38 Moravek, Mike 3) r:0.19 Schranck, Doug 4) r:0.08 Ripley, Nathan 64 26.86 29.59 24.27 21.50 4 Carthage College 'W' 1:44.51 1) Varner, Chris 2) r:0.27 Van Huis, Adam 3) r:0.31 Bax, Andy 4) r:0.24 Bendix, Blake 70 26.64 30.54 24.88 22.45 5 Carthage College 'X' x1:45.78 1) Pellican, Bob 2) r:0.40 Coder, Ben 3) r:0.25 Jackson, Mitchell 4) r:0.38 Hoover, Buck 62 27.33 29.93 25.31 23.21 6 Illinois Tech 'B' 1:46.20 1) Grimm, Stephen 2) r:0.34 Park, Jay 3) r:0.19 Callan, Mark 4) r:-0.01 Brady, Brian 65 28.23 29.33 25.43 23.21 7 Carthage College 'Z' x1:49.01 1) Alfes, Patrick 2) r:0.24 Steenrod, Chris 3) r:0.59 Scheirer, Clinton 4) r:0.26 Rothenbaum, Isaac 60 28.39 30.94 27.00 22.68 8 Carthage College 'Y' x1:55.56 1) Stowe, Tom 2) r:0.44 Kowal, Krzysztof 3) r:0.33 Boyer, Alex 4) r:0.52 Jones, Dan 59 29.73 35.64 26.89 23.30 -- Illinois Tech 'C' X1:52.27 1) Tapak, Ryan 2) r:-0.10 Miller, Mitchell 3) r:0.45 Chojnacki, Tomasz 4) r:0.17 Herbert, Greg 69 30.37 31.86 26.27 23.77 Event 4 Men 200 Yard IM =============================================================================== We're still searching for what I'd call a 'true' 200 IMer. All of our best IM'ers have had the 200 as their third event, so today's strategy was to throw a lot of paint against the wall to see what sticks. In truth, nothing really stood out. Stephen looked good and raced well, as did Doug, though I'm not sure that will be a tapered event for him. Of the rest of the swims, Chris Steenrod's breaststroke leg stood out the most. He looked good, looked comfortable. That's good for us because I have a feeling we're going to be leaning on him for that later on this season. Pelka also emerged, passing four guys to move to the front, but we don't expect our school record-holder in the 200 fly, 500 and 1650 free to be swimming the IM come taper time. =============================================================================== 1 Schranck, Stephen V Carthage 1:58.69 8 25.91 30.51 35.18 27.09 2 Olszeski, Adam J Lewis 1:59.37 3 Schranck, Doug Carthage 2:03.51 6 25.51 32.33 37.02 28.65 4 Harrison, Ryan R Lewis 2:05.62 5 Murphy, Aidan P Lewis 2:06.70 6 Muchna, Joe IIT 2:10.28 7 Halloway, Keiji IIT 2:10.42 8 Pelka, Bryan M Carthage 2:11.34 0 27.01 35.77 40.43 28.13 9 Alfes, Patrick Carthage 2:11.49 2 28.50 33.06 40.08 29.85 10 Steenrod, Chris Carthage x2:11.58 0 29.58 35.16 36.51 30.33 11 Van Huis, Adam Carthage x2:11.90 2 28.05 35.64 37.70 30.51 12 Glover, Adam Carthage x2:13.01 6 28.61 35.10 39.28 30.02 13 Ross, Eric Carthage x2:13.98 3 29.44 33.51 41.44 29.59 14 Boyer, Alex Carthage x2:15.73 9 28.76 34.50 41.65 30.82 15 Gebhardt, AJ J Lewis 2:17.73 16 Moravek, Mike Carthage x2:26.44 3 33.97 39.50 38.93 34.04 17 Tapak, Ryan IIT 2:27.74 Event 6 Men 50 Yard Freestyle =============================================================================== Time-wise, most of our 50's were more impressive than their relay starts from the medley. Krzystof narrowly missed a lifetime best, and despite the 0.86 reaction time, had an exceptional start. In actuality, all of our sprinters really seem to be getting the nuances of the catapult start we teach them. We learned the catapult from Steve Crocker who has come to work camps here and who has also come out to work with the team a couple of times. The freshmen are still getting comfortable with it and need to develop more power, but guys like Blake, Bax, Buck and Isaac are now enjoying the fruits of time spent on the blocks and in the weight room. =============================================================================== 1 Mehr, Andrew IIT 22.25 :+0.71 2 Pinsonneault, Kyle IIT 22.26 3 Bendix, Blake Carthage 22.68 :+0.75 3 Bax, Andy Carthage 22.68 :+0.82 5 Cuffe, Dale IIT 22.87 6 Taylor, Joe IIT 22.95 7 Winiecki, Kyle Carthage 22.97 :+0.71 8 Sommer, John W Lewis 23.05 9 Rothenbaum, Isaac Carthage 23.23 :+0.76 10 Callan, Mark IIT x23.25 11 Pellican, Bob Carthage x23.47 :+0.75 12 Jones, Dan Carthage x23.50 :+0.81 13 Hoover, Buck Carthage x23.67 :+0.89 14 Brady, Brian IIT x23.89 15 Pavlakovich, Luke T Lewis 24.15 16 Chojnacki, Tomasz IIT x24.19 17 Kowal, Krzysztof Carthage x24.30 :+0.86 18 Scimeca, Victor Lewis 24.31 19 Grimm, Stephen IIT x24.58 20 Swillum, Bryce IIT x25.34 21 Scheirer, Clinton Carthage x25.57 :+0.84 22 Miller, Mitchell IIT x25.62 23 Radzik, Izydor IIT x28.13 24 Wylie, Bill IIT x30.68 Event 8 Men 500 Yard Freestyle =============================================================================== Our lineup in the 500 was a mixture of distance guys and guys like Mitchell, Nathan and Tom who were in their for training purposes. Those guys tended to leave too much in the tank (consider that Mitchell's final split was faster than Bryan Pelka's), but I think we got the desired training effect out of them. Bryan's swim was like last week's - aggressive, lacking speed, but also lacking much drop-off in his splits. I was a little concerned last week considering he'd been 4:48-4:52 pretty consistently in the fall, but I'm increasingly feeling better because his training hasn't really missed a beat. The last time he swam like that was his freshman year when he posted his best time in the 500. Eric went out more aggressively than last week and was rewarded with a one second drop. Adam was a bit more conservative and unable to get up to speed and Alex seemed to be shrugging off the remnants of illness. The 500 was probably our best event across the board thus far. =============================================================================== 1 Coates, Kevin A Lewis 4:44.65 2 Olszeski, Aaron D Lewis 4:48.48 3 Ament, Jason P Lewis 4:52.81 4 Pelka, Bryan M Carthage 4:55.30 0 26.30 28.79 30.02 30.19 30.19 30.17 29.93 30.18 29.98 29.55 5 Ross, Eric Carthage 5:01.52 5 26.63 29.41 30.26 30.67 30.78 30.82 30.81 30.89 30.92 30.33 6 Glover, Adam Carthage 5:04.00 2 27.41 29.73 30.38 30.95 31.01 31.04 31.17 31.20 31.18 29.93 7 Marx, Greg M Lewis 5:04.38 8 Van Huis, Alex Carthage 5:07.54 1 27.59 30.23 30.50 31.12 31.17 30.91 31.23 31.58 31.73 31.48 9 Ripley, Nathan Carthage x5:10.84 5 27.21 30.03 30.87 31.33 31.71 31.73 31.52 32.34 32.28 31.82 10 Muchna, Joe IIT 5:11.45 11 Czarobski, Arty E Lewis x5:12.05 12 Jackson, Mitchell Carthage x5:12.17 6 28.75 31.04 31.64 32.05 32.26 32.04 31.69 31.88 31.31 29.51 13 Stowe, Tom Carthage x5:13.20 14 Herbert, Greg IIT 5:50.66 Event 10 Men 200 Yard Breaststroke =============================================================================== We decided to test Stephen's legs a little by keeping him in the 200 breast. We'd been resting him for much of the last week and by now he was sick and tired of breaststroke pull, breast pull with a flutter kick and breast with a dolphin kick. He looked solid, though very conservative, and by the last half you could see that he was not pushing the kick much. As a result, I think we'll be continuing to rest the legs. One byproduct of all this is that his pull has never looked stronger and better. Adam VanHuis made his debut here. Like his brother, Adam was getting over some flu-like symptoms. He wsa out pretty conservatively, and by the last 50 realized it and brought it home with a very nice 36-mid split. Against Olivet last week, Ben, Chris and Mike stepped up to give us a big boost. That's the type of thing a good dual meet can bring out of guys. Today though, they were a little more conservative, and that (subconscious) decision hurt them. Race more - think less. Last week Rip split a 24.2 and 24.5 and we talked about how if he did that this week, he'd never catch the IIT sprinter, so he went out faster (but not TOO fast) and still brought back the second half 0.04 faster than last week - almost, but just shy of first place. Kyle, Isaac and Blake all finished in quick succession. Kyle and Alex were both out on the conservative side but brought it home fairly strong. Again Blake's start was good, however his third turn (and the breath that came with it) really hurt him. Doug Schranck, the man who likes to take his 200 fly out FAST actually held back. Last week he was out in 55.2. This week - a 57.1 and the payoff was huge. He ran down the IIT flyer with - according to him - his first ever 31-split for the final 50. He back was nearly 1.2 seconds faster in the final 50 to cruise into first and, added that this was a much less painful way to swim the 200 fly. Alex's swim was a big improvement over last week's 2:12. His middle 100 was much slower than usual, allowing to have some gas left in the tank in that final 50. Tom's drop from last week was similar - most of the gain also made in the final 50, though not quite enough to pass the fading Lewis flyer. Clinton made his 200 fly debut. His first effort was a good one, but it was clear that he wasn't going kamakazie a la Doug Schranck, so I think the more racing experience he gets, the better off he's going to be. =============================================================================== 1 Schranck, Doug Carthage 1:59.63 3 26.42 30.65 31.50 31.06 2 Cuffe, Dale IIT 2:00.58 6 26.64 30.09 30.91 32.94 3 Muchna, Joe IIT 2:04.50 9 28.79 31.29 32.25 32.17 4 Van Huis, Alex Carthage 2:08.79 5 28.86 32.81 33.76 33.36 5 Halloway, Keiji IIT 2:09.96 5 27.97 32.00 34.55 35.44 6 Sommer, John W Lewis 2:10.08 7 27.37 31.73 33.81 37.17 7 Stowe, Tom Carthage 2:10.61 9 28.56 32.51 34.23 35.31 8 Scheirer, Clinton Carthage 2:15.59 5 29.29 33.01 36.30 36.99 Event 18 Men 1000 Yard Freestyle =============================================================================== We came out looking much better in the afternoon session. He went out a little slower than last week, but brought the back half back about seven seconds better than last week, thus reaffirming my belief that his training is on target. Adam and Eric both went out aggressively. In Adam's case he squeezed another second out of his lifetime best. He also swam an excellent race - holding back just a bit (probably too much really) and then stalking the pack. These two guys really give us our first 1-2 punch in the 200 free in some time. Isaac and Mitchell are about to make that a 1-2-3-4-5 punch. 'Sic' went his best-ever unrested 200 free and Mitchell really held his own - looking strong off of the walls. Like Kyle, both guys held back a little, but that last 50 also showed them stepping up to race in a way we hadn't during the morning session. Blake also went his best-ever unrested 200. He swam it with uncanny pacing, not like the true sprinter he is. With the wealth of talent we have in the 100 butterfly, I think the 200 free becomes a legitimate event for him on day two of the meet. None of our 1000 guys was really sharp in the 200, but then again neither were any of the Lewis guys who swept us in the 1000. Bryan, Alex, and Adam swam (and looked) tired - they weren't able to muster much speed beyond what they had in the 500 earlier today. Alex and Krzysztof were both much improved over last week's effort. Alex, his confidence building, was nearly four seconds better while Krzysztof clipped a second over last week. =============================================================================== 1 Olszeski, Adam J Lewis 1:45.90 2 Cuffe, Dale IIT 1:47.06 3 Ripley, Nathan Carthage 1:47.41 4 24.95 27.64 27.76 27.06 4 Winiecki, Kyle Carthage 1:47.80 8 25.21 27.59 27.53 27.47 5 Mehr, Andrew IIT 1:49.35 6 Olszeski, Aaron D Lewis 1:51.06 7 Marx, Greg M Lewis 1:52.19 8 Bendix, Blake Carthage 1:52.93 6 25.78 28.69 29.68 28.78 9 Jackson, Mitchell Carthage 1:53.31 6 27.10 28.89 29.13 28.19 10 Rothenbaum, Isaac Carthage x1:53.45 9 25.79 29.35 29.88 28.43 11 Pelka, Bryan M Carthage x1:54.51 2 26.55 29.63 29.72 28.61 12 Van Huis, Alex Carthage x1:54.93 3 26.79 29.35 29.53 29.26 13 Glover, Adam Carthage x1:54.94 7 26.32 29.20 30.20 29.22 14 Coates, Kevin A Lewis 1:55.27 15 Ament, Jason P Lewis x1:55.32 16 Kowal, Krzysztof Carthage x1:56.50 9 26.62 29.45 30.78 29.65 17 Boyer, Alex Carthage x1:57.76 0 26.71 29.64 30.62 30.79 18 Scimeca, Victor Lewis x2:02.21 19 Brady, Brian IIT 2:02.28 Event 24 Men 100 Yard Breaststroke =============================================================================== Like the first relay, we saw our depth exposed witout Stephen in the race. Ben and Mike were both a little off of last week - both adding all of their time in the first 50. Chris and Adam both had in-season bests, Chris especially swam well - going about 3/4 of a second better than this point in any of his previous seasons. For us to get better though, we're going to have to rely on this trio of freshman and Chris Steenrod in a big, big way. =============================================================================== 1 Pavlakovich, Luke T Lewis 1:02.06 3 28.80 33.26 2 Park, Jay IIT 1:03.66 1 30.52 33.14 3 Czarobski, Arty E Lewis 1:04.10 3 29.96 34.14 4 Murphy, Aidan P Lewis 1:05.23 4 30.08 35.15 5 Coder, Ben Carthage 1:05.28 1 30.64 34.64 6 Bax, Andy Carthage 1:05.90 7 31.25 34.65 7 Moravek, Mike Carthage 1:06.01 7 31.11 34.90 8 Van Huis, Adam Carthage 1:06.84 7 31.56 35.28 9 Steenrod, Chris Carthage x1:08.52 0 32.67 35.85 10 Halloway, Keiji IIT 1:09.61 0 32.46 37.15 11 Miller, Mitchell IIT 1:11.70 4 32.98 38.72 12 Swillum, Bryce IIT 1:12.21 1 33.78 38.43 13 Wylie, Bill IIT x1:20.24 8 38.03 42.21 14 Radzik, Izydor IIT x1:22.01 1 37.89 44.12 Event 26 Men 100 Yard Backstroke =============================================================================== The results of the 100 back were sounding like a broken record - good second- halfs, sluggish first halfs. That's not entirely suprising considering we were wrapping up a long day that began with dryland/swimming at 6:30. Chris jumped in for his first event since the relay. He'd been trying to ward off a sinus infection, and still managed to swim well. How good were we the second fifty? Mitchell nearly negative split the race. =============================================================================== 1 Olszeski, Adam J Lewis 54.20 5 27.00 27.20 2 Harrison, Ryan R Lewis 54.41 9 26.45 27.96 3 Varner, Chris Carthage 56.84 7 27.18 29.66 4 Pellican, Bob Carthage 58.25 4 28.33 29.92 5 Alfes, Patrick Carthage 59.37 6 29.18 30.19 6 Grimm, Stephen IIT 1:00.50 8 29.25 31.25 7 Jackson, Mitchell Carthage 1:00.74 5 30.13 30.61 8 Tapak, Ryan IIT 1:04.75 4 31.72 33.03 9 Gebhardt, AJ J Lewis 1:04.94 5 31.27 33.67 Event 28 Men 400 Yard Freestyle Relay =============================================================================== With the team looking much better in the second half of the day, we opted to split our relays. By way of comparison, had we pulled our four best splits together, we'd have gone a 3:15.17, which would have been good enough for the win. Each of our lead-off swimmers was sub-50, with Rip getting us out to the lead. Our second line wasn't much off. Bob bounced back from his 100 back to split 49.0 while Stephen, whose freestyle has been looking fantastic this year, popped a 48.1. Kyle got under 50.0 for the first time this season, while Andy was right on. Buck pushed the 'A' relay ahead of our 'X', "W' and 'Z' relays, going a quick 51.12 before handing off to Eric who split a 52.03 after a day that included the 500 and 1000 freestyle. Alex Boyer is a guy who bounced back with his fastest time of the year. Dan Jones and Clinton Scheirer both made big strides in their relay splits while Mitchell was well under his best unrested 100 free split. Overall it was a much better showing than our medley relays. We competed better, worried less, and not suprisingly found ourselves much more competitive. =============================================================================== 1 Illinois Tech 'A' 3:16.19 1) Cuffe, Dale 2) r:0.17 Taylor, Joe 3) r:0.34 Pinsonneault, Kyle 4) r:0.24 Mehr, Andrew 85 23.63 48.98 23.45 50.32 23.55 49.54 22.37 47.35 2 Carthage College 'A' 3:20.94 1) Ripley, Nathan 2) r:0.27 Pellican, Bob 3) r:0.25 Hoover, Buck 4) r:0.53 Ross, Eric 86 24.21 48.78 22.93 49.01 23.93 51.12 24.46 52.03 3 Carthage College 'W' 3:23.00 1) Schranck, Doug 2) r:0.32 Schranck, Stephen 3) r:0.31 Pelka, Bryan 4) r:0.29 Boyer, Alex 75 23.75 49.82 23.11 48.12 24.54 52.23 24.96 52.83 4 Carthage College 'X' x3:24.65 1) Rothenbaum, Isaac 2) r:0.20 Bax, Andy 3) r:0.40 Jones, Dan 4) r:0.18 Jackson, Mitchell 77 24.09 49.85 23.78 50.25 24.70 52.88 24.46 51.67 5 Lewis University-IL 'A' 3:24.81 1) Ament, Jason P 2) r:0.49 Coates, Kevin 3) r:0.31 Olszeski, Aaron 4) r:0.21 Gebhardt, AJ 81 24.82 51.73 24.06 52.11 23.99 51.00 23.87 49.97 6 Carthage College 'Z' x3:26.11 1) Bendix, Blake 2) r:0.27 Winiecki, Kyle 3) r:0.39 Kowal, Krzysztof 4) r:0.27 Scheirer, Clinton 74 23.63 49.34 23.61 49.16 24.87 52.90 26.30 54.71 7 Lewis University-IL 'C' 3:28.69 1) Olszeski, Adam J 2) r:0.40 Harrison, Ryan 3) r:0.35 Czarobski, Arty 4) r:0.35 Marx, Greg 72 24.28 51.05 23.66 50.23 24.92 53.66 24.77 53.75 8 Illinois Tech 'B' 3:34.10 1) Grimm, Stephen 2) r:0.40 Halloway, Keiji 3) r:0.14 Brady, Brian 4) r:0.02 Callan, Mark 82 25.46 55.97 24.22 52.08 24.70 53.11 24.98 52.94 -- Illinois Tech 'C' X3:30.10 1) Herbert, Greg 2) r:0.38 Muchna, Joe 3) r:0.35 Chojnacki, Tomasz 4) r:0.34 Park, Jay 86 25.69 54.20 24.61 51.35 24.82 53.24 24.52 51.31 -- Lewis University-IL 'B' X3:34.59 1) Murphy, Aidan P 2) r:0.45 Sommer, John 3) r:0.37 Scimeca, Victor 4) r:0.25 Pavlakovich, Luke 79 24.89 51.51 26.48 57.80 25.02 53.12 23.84 52.16 Men - Team Rankings - Through Event 28 1.
